Jay Pavlina's Illegal Profits

Image from: stock.xchng

"Exploding Rabbit makes $16,000 per year"

How does Exploding Rabbit make Money

This might seem crazy because Jay Pavlina of Exploding Rabbit doesn't sell anything and claims to have created a "non-profit" game called Super Mario Crossover. So how then does Jay Pavlina pull in $16,000 per year you ask? Exploding Rabbit makes this money from the Google advertisements that you see all over his site, explodingrabbit.com . He publically admitted to this in his video "An Inside Look at Super Action Squad" where he said the average Exploding Rabbit employee makes $2,000 per year and because there are 8 Exploding Rabbit employees, that equals $16,000.

What is on explodingrabbit.com to make money from

If you take a look at explodingrabbit.com you will notice that it is absolutely full of Nintendo stuff. The site background, the wiki, the forums, and of course the game Super Mario Crossover. Even the keywords for the site and the description of the site mention "Mario." Thus, he is purposefully using the fact that Nintendo characters are known and people search for them to bring people to his site and then make money off of advertisements.

Does Jay Pavlina own the rights to anything on explodingrabbit.com

Although most of what is on explodingrabbit.com is owned by Nintendo, Jay Pavlina does own the rights to the following only
  • Super Mario Crossover source code
  • explodingrabbit.com source code
  • Exploding Rabbit images
  • Super Action Squad

Summing it all up

To sum up, 90% of the content on explodingrabbit.com is owned by Nintendo and Jay Pavlina makes $16,000 a year from this illegal content. The funny part is that Jay Pavlina claims the ads are for "other things." As you can now see, as if you couldn't before, that is just not true.

What do you guys think?

  5. You logged in anonymously, so you'd have to ask the blog owner. If he can even do that. He seems to read the comments, so you're good.
Also fun fact, I can't delete my own comments because I didn't log in using an account for anything. I just used the Name+URL thing.

  6. Also some of it comes from donations. Probably not much though.

    1. By the way why are you ignoring the fact that some of the members have part-time jobs of their own, which probably bumps up the average?

  12. Whoa whoa whoa... you forgot something here.

I mean, what constitutes as an 'average' Exploding Rabbit employee? I'd assume Jay Pavlina isn't 'average'. Then again, it might still equal out to $16,000... on 'average', so maybe that's it.

    1. Jay Pavlina isn't 'average'?

      Delete
    2. @11:34AM I'm not quite sure what you're saying.
They added up all the team members' income (the result was $16k) and divided it by the amount of team members (which is eight), the result being $2k. That's the definition of an average (mathematicians prefer to call it the mean).
I'm probably misunderstanding you though, so could you clarify?

      Delete
    3. whoa whoa whoa.... math.....

      Delete
    4. You can see in my last sentence I accepted the mathematical 'average'.

But hey, I still stand that maybe one member is at least above average. Would one or two being above average effect the overall average? Probably not.. but hey.. I'm just an average person like most everyone else.

      Delete
    5. so your saying Jay and this other person take a bigger cut then the average ones do?

      Delete
    6. There were quite a few members that only worked on ER part-time, and had to earn money elsewhere. Besides, it's not like there can only be one person above the average.
Also the data we have, despite being the newest (and only) data available, is probably outdated. They haven't announced this in public yet, but I think they should, so I'll say it here: ER now only consists of three-and-a-half people. Apparently it wasn't working out, and Jay decided a smaller and more focused team would be more effective. The parts of the extra 200k that were documented for specific people were for everyone that's left, so technically he's only asking for $100k or $160k, not $200k+.

      Delete
    7. Right that's just it, its all so secret where that money went and who is making what. The name changes, game stuff changes, the team changes, and NOTHING happens with the game!!

Nobody in there right mind would give this guy a singe penny!

      Delete
    8. >nothing happens with the game
So what are they posting updates about?

      Delete
    9. So let's figure it out. At that time there were 8 team members and 4 were 'average' so making 2k a year and then let's say the other 3 were 'special' and Jay was 'extra special' so then if the 'special' ones make double or 4k then let's say Jay makes 4 times or 8k then goes like this

      Average (4*2k = 8k)
      Special (3*4k = 12k)
      Jay (8k)

So then they make a total of 28k a year. Is. That realistic, can you really make that much just from google ads and donations?

      Delete
    10. I think whats being said is most of them didn't make anything at all and had to get real jobs (which is probably the group that left). That means they weren't the 'average' group but actually made no money. So the mathematical 'average' was lowered a lot by the ones who didn't get paid. A few 0s can really bring down the avg.

      Delete
    11. Ok so an example is if Jay made $16,000 per year and the other 7 made $0 then the mathematical 'average' would be 16,000 divide 8 people so $2,000 per year for the mathematical avg.

    12. No progress has been made. Look at shovel knight which is also an indie game and was funded in april 2013. THEY RELEASED THE ALPHA IN JANUARY 2014!!!!

You can read all that in there PUBLIC updates see the thoughtful and prompt responses to backers comments.

THAT IS HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO WORK!

      Delete
    15. ok yes shovel-knight's release date was Sept 2013 so they did miss it by 3 months. During those 3 months yacht club was very much in contact with all backers and publically posted tons of updates.

In march jay will be a full year late. A FULL YEAR LATE!!!!

Comparing how shovel-knight handled the missed release date to how jay did is the most ridiculous crap I have ever heard honestly. And you know what? I would bet that shovel-knight is going to be a way better game then super fuck your ass squad is anyway!

    2. @Mario-Fan yes it looks that way the first post was in sept of 2013. Now what has Jay and team accomplished in that time??

      Delete
    3. A fair bit, actually. The problem is that as they decided gameplay was more important than graphics (it almost always is) and should be done first, they don't exactly have a lot of eyecandy (Jay himself has said he wishes there was more tangible stuff to see). There is stuff though. Quite a lot of it would be useful if you were a programmer using Unity trying to work out how to make a game. And they finished off their collision system.

      Delete
    4. That's missing the point I was making though. My original point was that it's not like people have only just started accepting it. They've been accepting it for nearly half a year. You should check out the comments on the first few posts (the first one was just an introduction and nobody thought anything needed to be said). The only noticeable differences are a) quantity of comments and b) amount of people that actually still have hope. I think I'm actually pretty much the only regular here from the forums (actually the only identifiable regular period now I think about it).

      Delete
    5. some "regulars" want to be anon. And here you can say what you want. I saw a post on ER where somebody asked to be refunded and got attacked by a group. Oh and then the post was locked and the last post of the guy was very suspect like it was typed by a mod or admin. VERY SUSPECT. Plus non-backers can't even see some stuff because Jay is one of the only KS user who keeps his updates private. So....

Some of the "regulars" might find Jays doings very suspect.....

And anything other then "I LOVE SRS!!!" is just dismissed by Jay like flies....

      Delete
    6. I said "identifiable" for a reason. Actually, is there anybody here who comes regularly and doesn't use anonymous?
As for the guy who wanted a refund, here's a quick summary I made of that thread:
      >OP wants refund
      >CJ64 says something stupid
      >W1-1 jumps on CJ64
      >OP clarifies some more
      >mod corrects mistakes
      >Jay says how to ask for refund (it's not like the OP put up any contact details)
      >Ryuza (former team member) says stuff
      >OP apparently has change of heart and asks for lock
      >mod locks
I see no groups attacking the OP there.
Also, I agree that non-backers should see more stuff, but he's showing the backers everything there is to show.

    7. Actually, come to think of it, I remember the guy posting about it elsewhere. Lemme find it...
      ...ffffound.
http://www.explodingrabbit.com/forum/threads/project-update-5-changes-to-name-and-release-plan.17344 (it's backers only, sorry, also johgaines only turns up on the third page)
As you might guess from the URL, this is when Jay first announced the name change and split into two games. The reactions were IMO very much predictable.

      Delete
    8. The last message where he flips over to super positive is very suspect like admin or mod typed that not the OP....

    9. If I could, I would contact him, but he didn't put up any contact details on his profile.

The author's comments are never about the subject at hand though (mainly answering questions about how blogs work i.e. can there be a comment feed, you hypocritically delete my comment you asshole, can you delete my comment plz), so that probably makes a difference.

They'll probably see how many updates there are (he decided monthly was good and, recently at least, he's stuck to that) and decide nothing's wrong.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I think you nailed it buddy. I think people, myself included, have been giving him a little more slack then most would get because he made Super Mario Crossover and that should count for something.

But this is getting ridiculous and he needs to get his shit in gear ASAP. Period.

  20. I backed Super RETRO Squad because it seemed like a fun idea and I liked Super Mario Crossover a lot. This has turned into a major debacle, and I laugh a little whenever I see updates from the project. He might finish it. Maybe. It'll never be like the game we all pledged to. I still would have liked to have seen Super Retro Squad. Gotta be honest - Super ACTION Squad can go suck a rotten left nut.
